WELCOME TO YOU AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

Welcome, the climate has changed the world over. Well...we have been told that countless times. In seminars, workshops, in the media everywhere! But come to think of it, How close to you do you think these issues of environmental change are? Most times we dont closely associate issues of environment with what is happening in our lives....they are too far.Until rains fail, until a stream near our residence dries up, until our taps runs dry, untill we get sick and a doctor diagnoses us with a disease caused by heavy metal disposition in our environment, untill........the list is endless. Issues of environment are closer to us than most of us may care. Here you will get very incisive articles on environmental topics.Again, welcome.

THE RAVAGES OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLUTION MAY THREATEN THE KENYAN COAST MANGROVES.

According to a recent research, climate change impacts associated with increased flooding and sedimentation may increase the sea level that could submerge mangroves at the Kenyan coast.

The report farther shows that death of mangroves due to climate change impacts has been observed in several areas along the coastline such as Gazi Bay, Mwache creek, Ngomeni, Tana River and Dodori creek.

Other threats include over-harvesting for firewood, charcoal, building timber, poles and traditional medicines.
While the above may cause depletion of this importanrt natural resource the major potential threats are due to oil pollution by oil spills.

Records have shown that between 1983 and 1993 Mombasa port and surrounding shores experienced a 391,680 tonne oil spill that affected mangroves around Port Ritz and Makupa creeks.

Other sources of mangrove depletion includes salt mining, and there are several salt extraction activities in the area. Environmental impacts associated with salt extraction include hyper salinity in areas close to mangroves leading to their death.

Poor land use practices in the hinterland has not helped matters as loads of sediments are flooded into the mangrove forests.

A lot of effort should be put in the conservation of this resource for the benefit of the current as well as the future generations. Many of these mangrove forests take years to mature, which would take as many if not more years to restore the disrupted ecosystem.

KENYA IS AMONG THE LEAST WATER SECURE COUNTRIES.

Do you know Kenya is among the least water safe countries? According to a recentlly released report,Only 37 per cent of Kenyans have access to safe water well below the international standard of 90 per cent.

According to the report, the country’s tap water supply of 64 cubic meters per capita is far below the global benchmark of 1,000 cubic meters per capita.

The situation is expected to deteriorate with the projected water per capita in 2025 being 235 cubic meters.

The shortage is due to degradation of water catchment areas in kenya owing to expanding human settlement and persistent droughts.

This is exacerbated by the rampant pollution of water and the rising population growth.

The reports claims none of the eight water service providers meet set benchmark. The providers supply about 273.8 million cubic meters per year that servers only 3.5 of 9.5 million people.

The report may not come as a surprise considering the wanton destruction of water catchment areas in kenya.A case in point is the Mau Escarpment which is a major water tower in kenya, without which major rivers flowng from these regions will dry up.

Hammerhead sharks is one of very intriguing animals to the marine researchers.Hammerhead sharks(Sphyma)get their names from the unusual shape of their heads.A hammerhead shark uses its wide head to find and trap stingrays by pinning them to the floor of the sea. They also eat bonny fishes, lobsters and crabs.

The hammerhead eyes are placed on each side of its head which allows it to search more area for food quickly than any other shark. It also has highly specialized sensory organs, which pick up electric signs of hiding living sea creatures. Its teeth are like the edge of a saw, while its mouth is on the underside of its head.

The great hammerhead is the largest of the nine species of this shark. It can grow up to six metres in length and weigh up to 450kgs.
Unlike many fish they do not lay eggs.Females give birth to live young ones(pups)which are born with more rounded heads. One litter can be from six to fifty pups.

These sharks are found in most warm ocean waters through out the world and are considered harmless to humans. However the great hammerheads enormous size and fierceness make it potentially dangerous.Hammerheads are among the few creatures that get a tan from exposure to sunlight, a feature shared by pigs and humans.Tanning occurrs when a hammerhead is in shallow waters or close to the surface for long periods.

Now you have been informed about the great hammerhead sharks,or have you? Keep it here for more on this and other environment and wildlife topics.

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW AND CARE ABOUT YOUR ENVIRONMENT?

welcome to you and your environment blog.
Let me start by asking you a question how much do you know about your environment? Let me rephrase my question. Has it ever crossed your mind that certain things are currently happening in this world because of certain things that you did or did not do? While certainly the answer is yes, most of us are unduly concerned since we think its other peoples business or that we may not even know the impact of our actions on what is happening around us.

Sometimes we may think its the governments business to protect the environment. It surely is! The developed countries are responsible with their large industries. They surely are! But we in our small ways can do small actions that can help protect or destroy the environment.

Are we not the same people who will plant eucalyptus trees in our farms (the same trees that absorb 30 gallons of water daily!?), cut trees without planting some more, dumping refuse in considerately? The environment needs us to maintain it in our small ways which add up. While nature needs us we all know we need it to survive as a humanity. We all can give an example of a river that we knew in our childhood that is either drying up or that has dried up, a bald ground that was once a forest, a valley that was once a lake etc...etc

In this blog site you will get more of the discussions on these issues; from wildlife, to various plant species , to natural resources available in this world and many more aspects of the natural environment around us.
