Do you know Kenya is among the least water safe countries? According to a recentlly released report,Only 37 per cent of Kenyans have access to safe water well below the international standard of 90 per cent.
According to the report, the country’s tap water supply of 64 cubic meters per capita is far below the global benchmark of 1,000 cubic meters per capita.
The situation is expected to deteriorate with the projected water per capita in 2025 being 235 cubic meters.
The shortage is due to degradation of water catchment areas in kenya owing to expanding human settlement and persistent droughts.
This is exacerbated by the rampant pollution of water and the rising population growth.
The reports claims none of the eight water service providers meet set benchmark. The providers supply about 273.8 million cubic meters per year that servers only 3.5 of 9.5 million people.
The report may not come as a surprise considering the wanton destruction of water catchment areas in kenya.A case in point is the Mau Escarpment which is a major water tower in kenya, without which major rivers flowng from these regions will dry up.
